Krutenau. The lively student and bohemian district east of the centre, full of bars, bistros and a local buzz. Good value and walkable to the old town. Great for nightlife and authenticity. Good for: Young travellers & nightlife.
Neustadt (German Imperial Quarter). The grand 19th-century district of wide boulevards and Wilhelmine architecture, also UNESCO-listed. Elegant, residential and near the university and parks. A quieter, characterful stay. Good for: Architecture & calm.
Gare (station area). Around the striking glass-domed main station, practical for TGV arrivals and day trips. Modern hotels and easy tram links, a short walk to Petite France. Best for convenience and value. Good for: Convenience & budget.
